Edge of Chaos – Screensaver Interpretation of Conway's Game of Life
The first thing you need to know about the Edge of Chaos application is what it can do for you. This application can entertain you; it is a screensaver that should prove to be interesting to watch. According to the developer, Edge of Chaos is an interpretation of the famous cellular automation “Conway’s Game of Life,” which demonstrates how elaborate patterns and behaviors can emerge from very simple rules.
Edge of Chaos displays a bunch of square thingies that from my point of view look like pixels. These “pixels” wiggle around the monitor until they form various shapes. Once all the pixels have settled down into various shapes, the process is repeated – just that the pattern chances; the size and color of the pixels changes. You can manually trigger a pattern change by pressing the space bar on your keyboard.
From Edge of Chaos’ configuration pane you can change the screensaver’s background. By default Edge of Chaos uses a snapshot of your desktop. You can also turn on the “Show Time” option and you will see the date and time in the bottom left hand corner. If you want to, you can select a song or a playlist and Edge of Chaos will play it in the background. To play a playlist file, Edge of Chaos will use your default music player.
Before you go get Edge of Chaos and put it to the test, take a look at the following details:
Download – the download weighs in at some 890KB. At such a lightweight download size, it should only take a moment to get the application off the web and onto your computer.
Installation – at the time of writing this and according to the developer, Edge of Chaos provides support for Windows 95, 98, Me, NT, 2000, XP, and Vista. During the installation process you are asked if you want to put desktop shortcuts on the screen; this will put a Configuration and a Run shortcut on the screen.
Limitations – the trial version displays a registration reminder.
Pros
Cons
